WHAT IS AN OSTEOPATH?

An Osteopath is a tertiary qualified and APHRA registered Allied Health practitioner who is able to diagnose, treat and examine conditions of the musculo-skeletal system.
We work in-conjunction with other health providers such as your GP.
A typical treatment consits of taking a full medical history and examining any scans you have relevant to your complaint.
Then we will perform a thorough physical examination. This can involve neurological testing, orthopaedic examination, gait analysis or functional testing. This is very similar to the tests you may be familiar with from your General Pracitioner.
Following the exmaintion, we (usually) have a good idea of your diagnosis. If we do require further clarification, we might need to refer you for imaging (such as x-ray or MRI).
Although this isn't the norm.
Then we treat using hands on methods such as; joint mobilisation, massage, dry needling, manipulation or stretching to work on the area. Techniques depend on safety and appropriate
At the end of the consult, you will have a plan in place for the management of your conditon. The plan will consist of advice (e.g. sleeping posture or work ergonomics), appropriate self management methods (e.g. heat or ice) as well as the plan for going forward.
Our goal is to get you back to normal function as soon as possible. Although we are sure you'll enjoy your time with us (we are a hoot) we don't encourage over-treatment for conditions.

We are also firm believers in active management of your complaint. Often manual therapy can be beneficial to aid in pain relief, however exercise prescription is a key part of our treatment to improve outcomes. We use software called PhysiApp to create a home-based program to improve your strength and to aid our recovery. We also have an amazing Pilates Studio right next door where we can further refer you if you need it.

CAN I SEE YOU THROUGH TAC/DVA/WROKCOVER OR MEDICARE?

This is a very common question. Typically we are a private billing practice, however we do provide billing through third party providers such as work cover, TAC and DVA (just bring your referral/claim number with you).

We can also see patients through the MEDICARE CHRONIC-DISEASE MANAGEMENT PROGRAM. These are known as an EPC (Extended Primary Care) and they are a referral written by your general practitioner (or practice nurse) referring you for additional services through Medicare. These referrals are provided at the discretion of your GP and there are criteria you must meet before you can be covered by an EPC.
